Dr Liam Back is an Interventional Cardiologist based in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. Dr Back completed his medical school training at the University of Newcastle / New England in 2012, obtaining a Bachelor of Medicine with Distinction. Following medical school, Dr Back completed his junior doctor training, basic physicians training, and cardiology advanced training at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick. He achieved his Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2020. Following completion of his core cardiology training in Australia, Dr Back travelled to the United Kingdom, and completed two highly competitive fellowships in interventional cardiology; the first at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, Wales, and the second at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester, England. Both fellowships had a subspecialty focus on complex percutaneous intervention and chronic total occlusion percutaneous intervention.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr Back has a strong interest in clinical research. He has been published in multiple highly regarded international medical journals including Circulation. He has worked as a sub-primary investigator for several large randomised controlled trials including the SELUTION De Novo study, and the IOCYTE AMI-3 trial. In 2024, Dr Back achieved a Masters in Clinical Trials Research from the University College London. He continues to be involved in clinical research with a subspecialty interest in coronary atherosclerosis and bioresorbable stent technology.
Interests
Dr Back is an Interventional Cardiologist with an interest in coronary artery disease, particularly complex revascularisation and CTO. He is a strong advocate for primary preventative medicine however and is passionate about all aspects of vascular risk modification, including the management of lipids and obesity in both a symptomatic and asymptomatic population. He enjoys the diagnostic process of all common cardiac symptoms including chest pain, undifferentiated breathlessness, syncope and palpitations. He is furthermore passionate about the management of common cardiac symptoms in the elderly, with a patient-focused approach to this unique population.
Outside of medicine, Dr Back is a scholarship mentor and iDrive instructor for the Youth Off The Streets organisation. He enjoys speaking Spanish, playing piano, guitar and singing, running marathons (slowly) and talking optimistically about the Rabbitohs chances this season
